About the Toronto Centre Riding

Bounded by Moore Avenue in the north, Avenue Road and University Avenue (to College) in the west, the Don River to the east and south to Lake Ontario, Toronto Centre is located in the heart of downtown Toronto. The riding covers a large area that includes parts of Toronto’s waterfront, the Distillery District, as well as the communities of Cabbagetown, Rosedale, St. Jamestown, Regent Park, the Esplanade, and Moore Park.

Toronto Centre is a riding of incredible diversity. Within the space of only a few blocks are some of the country’s wealthiest citizens; one of the largest and most diverse immigrant communities; and one of Canada’s oldest social housing areas. In St. Jamestown alone, 57 different languages are spoken. In addition, Toronto Centre is home to the largest gay and lesbian community in Canada and the second largest in North America.

Toronto Centre proudly boasts more co-op housing than some provinces; consequently, one of the riding’s most important issues is housing. Other prominent issues particular to the riding include those surrounding immigration, community safety, support for the arts, environmental protection, and the preservation of historical buildings.

When one considers the numerous ethnic communities; the number of financial, educational, and religious institutions; and the plethora of social services organizations and hospitals to be found in this riding, it is easy to see how Toronto Centre truly represents the best aspects of our country.
